Set to begin operations in 2029, here is what we can expect from the new Dubai Metro Blue Line

On Friday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the ambitious Dubai Metro Blue Line project.

Costing AED18 billion ($4.9bn approximately) in total investments, the Blue Line will be Dubai’s newest and most significant public transportation initiative when it becomes operational on October 9, 2029.

This extensive project aims to further improve Dubai’s public transport system over the next decade.

Dubai Metro Blue Line: What we know so far

“Remarkable achievements don’t happen by chance; rather, they result from deliberate planning, creative thinking and a commitment to attaining the highest levels of leadership. The true measure of achievement lies in its positive impact on society. We strive for the best for our society, sparing no effort to achieve it at the highest standards,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line will be the first train route crossing over The Creek in the emirate.

The Dubai Metro Blue Line expansion will span 30 kilometers and include 14 new stations, linking 9 different areas according to the Dubai 2040 Urban Plan.

The route will feature the largest underground station, covering 44,000 square metres in the International City area and will also feature the first interchange station between the Red and the Blue Lines at Centrepoint station, It will also feature the first interchange station between the Green and the Blue Lines at The Creek station, In addition, the network will also feature an “iconic station” with unique architectural design.

This will also be the first transport project that will be compatible with green buildings specifications (platinum category).

The total network once the Blue Line opens in 2029, will total up to 131 kilometres, with 78 stations and 168 trains.

“The total expected benefits will exceed AED56.5 billion by 2040, supporting the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The Dubai Metro is one of the mega developmental projects which has translated the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to make Dubai the best city for living. Today, and with its new route, it continues to outline Dubai’s exceptional future,” Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE, said on the launch of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project.

Stations under the Dubai Metro Blue Line will cover areas of:

  • Dubai Creek Harbour
  • Ras Al Khor industrial are
  • Dubai International City 1
  • Dubai International City 2 and 3
  • Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Dubai International Academic City
  • Mirdif City Centre
  • Al Warqa’a

The new line is expected to serve over one million people living in the regions it will connect once operational. It is also expected to benefit over 50,000 students.

Once operational, the Blue Line will help ease traffic congestion on key Dubai roads within the project by 20 percent.

The launch of the Blue Line will also establish a direct link between Dubai International Airport and nine new areas.

“Dubai Metro Blue Line comprises two main routes. The first route begins at the Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line, located in Al Jaddaf. It then passes through Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor, before reaching Dubai International City 1, which has an interchange station. The route continues towards Dubai International City 2 and 3, extending to Dubai Silicon Oasis and up to the Academic City. This section spans 21 km and features 10 stations.

“The second route of the Blue Line starts from Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line in Al Rashidiya. It passes through Mirdif and Al Warqaa, concluding at the Dubai International City 1 Interchange Station. This route measures 9 km in length and includes four stations. The project also includes the construction of a metro depot at Al Ruwayyah 3,” Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.
